Did you know you may be able to reduce your healthcare costs through the Medicare Safety Net?

If you see doctors or need tests regularly, your medical expenses can add up. The Medicare Safety Net provides extra financial support by increasing your Medicare rebates once you reach a certain amount of out-of-pocket costs in a calendar year (1 January – 31 December).

What counts towards the Medicare Safety Net?

Out-of-hospital services such as:

  • GP and specialist consultations
  • Pathology and radiology
  • Psychology services
  • Some allied health services (with a Medicare item number)

How It works:

  • Singles: You are automatically registered — nothing extra is needed.
  • Couples and families: You can combine your costs by registering as a family, helping you reach the threshold sooner. Registration only needs to be done once.
  • Once you reach the annual threshold, Medicare will pay you higher rebates (up to 80% of your out-of-pocket costs) for the rest of the year.

Current Thresholds:

  • $2,544.30 per calendar year for individuals and families.
  • $811.80 per calendar year if you hold a concession card or receive Family Tax Benefit Part A.

Please note: Your doctor’s fee will remain the same, but you’ll receive more back from Medicare once you’ve reached the threshold.
